You should have no problems as long as you follow the wiring protocal.
Blue - Neutral
Green/ Yellow - Earth
Brown/Red - Live

Please also remove the fuse from the little compartment in the fitted plug and install the fuse in your new plug.

Like others have said before me you will be perfectly safe as long as you put the wires in the plug correctly. The fuse is likely to be a 13 amp.Make sure that the wire keeper, where the flex enters the plug,is secure.A[art from that there should be no problem.Anybody who needs to call an electrician in simply to rewire a plug would do well to attend night school and do a DIY course :) [unless they are touting for work that is ;) ]

Removing a moulded on plug and fitting your own is not a problem and nor does it present any kind of electrical hazard provided that you fit the standard plug correctly and use a correctly rated fuse (you should be able to use the fuse from the moulded on plug).
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure how changing the plug will help - won't the flex be the same length?

Why not use a short extension lead?
