I would think it would depend if the triangle was sitting on it's point , or sitting on a flat side.

That is a good question, mathematically the best arrangement for the maximum area is a circle.
A good example of this is oranges there are packed for transport and display because this is an efficient ideal solution to gain the space available.
We have to look at nature to discover that
most shapes are near circles or spheres, this must say something.
There is probably a mathematical proof on this.

Its actually hexagons but a circle is better than a triangle

not according to the BEE, their preference is hexagons ... if your shape is planar, then area is what matters, if it is only linear, then weight distribution is dependent on size and linkage of the shapes
