Both Norton and Macafee are reasonable packages although I prefer Macafee, saying that the 2007 Norton seems to have been tweaked quite a bit. They both use a lot of computer resources and can slow your machine down quite considerably. A retail package I would recommend if Panda Titanium as it seems to be more thorough and easy to use.
Personally I now just use AVG free, together with spybot and spyware blaster (touch wood) I haven't had any real problems and the ones I have had were easily remedied with one click of the mouse.
Don't forget that depending on your ISP they may well supply anti-virus software but I should read up it to see how reliable it is.
Please don't fall into the trap that if you have to pay for something it has to be better, it really doesn't.
PS It is as well too install SP2 whatever anti-virus software you are installing.

I would get rid of Norton but I would not replace it with McAfee! I would install AVG Anti-Virus, it's free and works better than McAfee and Norton. I can't begin to tell you how many computers I had to remove these two programs from in order to properly remove virus infections using AVG.
AVG and many other free anti-virus applications can be found here -

I just read a newly written article the other day on Tech Republic regarding the major antivirus software suites and how they definitely slow your system down. I'd quote it here but it is very long and quite technical in regard to the methods and measurements they used to test the various antivirus packages.
Believe it or not, Symantec and McAfee were the biggest system resource hogs. These two suites of software have become very large and if you check your system Task Manager you'll see that Symantec or McAfee will be running about 4 to 6 ".exe" programs and it will be gobbling about 100M of RAM or so.
Not only that but their prices are exhorbatant.
I canned Symantec earlier this summer and began using the free AVG Antivirus. So far it is great and it rated as one of the lowest in regards to using your system resources.
Personally I say give AVG a try and if you are not happy with it then go ahead and spend your money on one of the other major suites.
You can get AVG at http://www.download.com

neither is worth the time or day. i would suggest if you paying for it look deeper into new ones out there . Norton Will hang computer up really bad and mcafee is like a virus. hard to remove and never remembers your settings.

Got rid of Norton myself for same reason....Put Avast on for Anti Virus (free) and it found 5 viruses that Norton missed
Using Zone Alarm (free) for firewall ...no problems
Also use Firefox as browser its much safer than IE

Both suck!
"The most popular brands of antivirus on the market (Norton, mcafee etc)… have an 80 percent miss rate… malware authors are specifically testing their Trojans and viruses to make sure they can bypass these applications before releasing them in the wild"

Use Avast

Firstly, you should have SP2 generally, as your computer will be vulnerable to loads of other problems.
Secondly, rather than pay for Antivirus and Firewall and other security programs, you can get load of free goodies from here:

AVG and Zone Alarm are very popular free programs.
