First, as a physician, I must tell you never believe your doctor's opinions. The US has lost something that is very difficult to explain...but we have lost civic responsibility. Inspite of emails or snail-mail, few people ever contact their congressmen, many do not vote and most accept new laws being rammed down their throats without a peep. Many of the younger people are defiant of the laws (especially about drugs) and the morality has gone to hell...look at some of these questions...."Help, I am a 14 year old virgin and I can't stand it???" Parents have become too tolerant and the kids do pretty much what they like. Teachers have become babysitters and the police often turn a blind eye to things. We lack a definitive foreign policy, support corrupt nations and petty dictators, our national credibility is at an all time low, we interfere with other nations' domestic affairs....and the problems just keep on coming. A benevolent dictator is not an answer, we need a ruthless man or woman to clean house, or as we say in the military...Kick a** and take names. It would be rough but the alternative is a slow decline into oblivion.

The answer to your question is that all the current Americans are experiencing the present like we are in a dictatorship. Bush is out there somewhere and he is not coming down to earth. The America he is trying to preserve is a fiction and a secret fiction at that.
The American people are not even an after thought for Bush and his boys and girls. Rummy, Condi, Chendi, and Bushie are all trying to save their own rear ends in any way they can accomplish it.
So, the next major act may not be the last, but it will be right on the edge of the last.
Good Luck to all of us!

A benevolent and wise king or dictator would be better for the short term. But, the problem with that is the lifespan of the good king or dictator is less than forever. Inevitably, the next guy isn't so nice or wise and the people have little to no recourse to get rid of him short of all out civil war. That realization led to the type of government we have today. George Washington, who could easily have become king of the United States, refused because he realized that such a course would lead to the type of government they'd just fought to free themselves from.
