Uninstall media player and then go to microsoft and download media player 10 and try ripping them again. Don't use real player. On playback turn down the volume on the media player and up on your speakers for better quality.

Use dedicated software to rip your cds to mp3 - use a bitrate of no less than 128kbps, or 192kpbs if you have the disk space.
Some good free tools

CDex

Focus Free CD Ripper

Switch Sound File Converter

(click on "Windows Download" = this is the free version)

Not free (30 day trial for mp3 encoder) but very cheap
DBPoweramp

All require a learning curve, some steeper than others but it is a matter of which you feel most comfortable using

Check the bit-rate you are using when sampling the CD. The higher the bit-rate, then the better the quality. For MP3 try 192kb og higher, for WMA 128kb or higher.

It may also be worth closing other applications, as already suggested.
