JIMI. And NO

Without doubt Jimi Hendrix was the most influental guitarist ever, but, not the best... There are many guitarists that are far better than him, more talented, and more creative. Some of those are Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Gary Moore, Vinnie Moore, Steve Ray Voughn, Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Iron Maiden guitatists, and,
ofcource the best of all, maybe the best guitarist ever borned, the swedish Yngwie Malmsteen(who started playing guitar because of Hendrix). His technique, creativity, misical intelligence, hard work, and his talent makes him not to be compared with other guitar gurus but other music gurus that passed from our planet in history. I can compare him with Beethoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Paganini and a little more. His music complexity, makes it difficult for a non-guitarist to undrestand it, his usage of the minor harmonic, and fryggian scales make his music so nice and mysterious, reminding something from the classicals..........................There are a lot of things to say about Yngwie but this would take a long time....Just try to listen to his music, and compare him,and his style, with others. Hope i helped...Thank you for the question and i als wanna thank Yngwie that exists and inspires me...!!

Without doubt Jimi Hendrix, together with Robert Johnson, is one of the two most influential guitar players ever. In that sense Jimi can be immitated but cannot be redone... there are people who can immitate him perfectly though.
I am not sure an answer can be given to your second question as there are so many guitarist that you can name as best depending on what you emphasize... Who would you chose for example: Steve Vai, Gary Moore, Eric Clapton, SRV, Tommy Immanuel, Paco de Lucia, Santana, John McLaughlin, Eric Johnson... There is no answer to that.

wow, nobody mentioned Eric Johnson, but they mention Robert Johnson. Granted that ole boy could play some blues; some even say he invented them. But as far as being the greatest? There's no single answer to that question. I defy anyone to play as fast as Django Reinhart, or as sweet sounding as Chet Atkins, or as technically proficient as Andres Segovia. There can be no best guitarist ever. How would you judge such a thing? Jimi Hendrix was very influential, that is true. But there's probably thousands or people who can "play it like Jimi". Of course, they're just imitating him, so that don't mean squat.

Well, it's personal choice really... Jimi's pretty good, but not my favourite... Some of my favourites happen to be Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman (Offspring), Greg Bergdorf (Zebrahead), Cris (Lacuna Coil) and Stuart Adamson (Big Country).
