It seems he just got tired of the effort it took to be #1.
Mat did not have the big weapons that others had, the server of Becker or Sampras, the forehand of Lendl. He worked hard and had to execute exact game plans to win.

1988 US Open was Wilander's seventh Grand Slam singles title and resulted in his receiving the World No. 1 ranking, having won three of the year's Grand Slams, two Mercedes Super 9 titles (Miami and Cincinnati), and one other title. He held the No. 1 ranking for a total of 20 weeks through the end of January 1989.
It was his last Grand Slam title.

After the US Open 1988 Wilander won just two more titles - in 1988 he won in Palermo and in 1990 he won Itaparica.

Wilander retired from the professional tour in 1996. He now spends much of this time living in Hailey, Idaho (part of the Sun Valley ski resort) with his wife Sonja (nee Mulholland), a South African-born model.

He was 24 at he time of his last grand slam title 7 in all but just look at all the other greats that were around at the time Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Becker, Lendl amongst others.
Did anyone realise that in 1988 he beat an Aussie in the Australian final, a Frenchman at the French Open and a naturalised American at the Us Open. But he would have been out of luck at Wimbledon as if he had reached the final, there would not have been a Brit to face him.
