In short, wildlife extinction is mostly due to environmental changes which compromise the survival of a species due to loss of habitat, food sources, improper living conditions, and last but certainly not least, human population which contributes by means of air and water pollution/contamination, hunting, and destroying natural wildlife habitats.

The first 3 answerers are only partially correct.

Some species of wildlife simply cannot adapt to changing environments. So if a species is in an isolated geography, a climate change or change in predation can cause an extinction. think, for example of the ice age. So technically, it is the species' failure to adapt to a change in its environment that is the cause of its extinction. The way humans fit in is that we are really good at changing the environment (and usually not in wildlife-friendly ways).

Nature.

Humans, being one of many products of nature (if you are religious, just think of God as being the ultimate nature), are as much a force of nature as any other device.

Too few people realize that extinction is the way of nature and that it's not something humans invented. Natural selection keeps life going.
