You should know that only 50% of baby's heartbeats are audible at 10 weeks EGA (estimated gestational age). I'm not sure how far along your "3 months" is since some people start counting in different places.
You should also know that the time it takes to hear your baby's heartbeat is in know way indicative of how well or poorly your baby is doing. The fact that a heart rate is audible means that the chances of something bad happening are very low.
If there was any concern, I'm sure your doctor would suggest an ultrasound study. These are not done routinely for everybody by everybody because there are small, but known risks to the mother and fetus. However, they are an excellent and very, very safe way to be sure that everything okay if ever a concern arises.

It is dependant only on how the doc places the listening device.
These devices pick up the sounds inisde your stomach including that of the heartbeat of the child, extract only the sound of the heartbeat, amplify it electrically and display it on the screen or print it on a paper as the case may be. The other sounds could be sound of digestion, your internal muscle movements, your lungs and your own heartbeat.
So the probes for the device has to be placed on your stomach / adjusted well to get a good record. Sometimes the position of the baby will be such that the probe may not be able to pick the sound correctly and therefore a record will not be generated.
so it takes some time to catch the event. hope that answers your question.
enjoy motherhood.

Sometimes it takes a while to find the heartbeat..even though you cant feel it yet the baby is moving around a lot so it takes a while to find the baby and hear the heartbeat remember your doctor can't see where the baby is so at this point it is a general guess. Just keep taking good care of yourself and the baby should do alright thats really all you can do at this point.

If u are worried about baby an in-office ultrasound can be done in 5 mins, can see heartbeat at 6 weeks, at least by 7 for sure. Very easy.

How many weeks are you? Before my doc tried to find the heartbeat, she told me that sometimes you can't hear it before 12 weeks. I was 10 weeks at the time. She also told me that if she wasn't able to find it right away to not be alarmed. It took her a while to find it, I tried not to panic and she finally did. I agree with some of the other answers on here, but do some research.

I hope you don't smoke. Or drink. Or do any drugs.
Those could affect the heartbeat. If you are, then please be honest with the doctor and tell him/her.
