The Battle of Gaugamela?

2006-09-30 20:39:35 · answer #1 · answered by Chris R 3 · 0 0

Probably all kinds of interesting things we don't really know about. Julius Caesar hadn't reformed the Roman Calendar yet. The Greeks weren't using a calendar with October in it. And since Julius Caesar was still a couple few centuries away from being born, October was still the eighth month of the Roman Calendar. After Julius inserted his own month, "July", his great-nephew and Heir, Augustus Caesar, followed suit and stuck in "August". That's when October became the tenth month and was moved into the fall. Even then, it would be a millennium or more till Pope Gregory really gave us our modern Calendar. And since the schism between Catholicism and the eastern orthodox church had occurred centuries before, many eastern European nations have different October first than ours in the west. When scholars try to convert ancient calendars and timekeeping into our modern equivalents, the results are always suspect, no matter how talented the scholars may be.
