you have three option
1.install Linux on the new partition
For doing this you can use partition magic or paragon partition manager
2 using a virtual server like vmware
now they have free offer
this is the link
http://register.vmware.com/content/registration.html
the advantage is that you can try the program, learn it
if something go but only this virtual server (a separate folder) it is damaged not all your system
For more you can go to the main page at
http://www.vmware.com/
3 using a live Cd- some distribution have this option but don't know if suse have.

The thing about Linux is: it is so configurable. Some configurations come in packages called "distro"s. I would highly recommend you download a CD image from ubuntu.org. That will save as an ISO disc image to your hard drive, then burn that image onto a CD.
Go into the BIOS of your computer after you have the CD and disable the Hard Drive that has your XP and make sure boot from CD.
Linux will be running your machine. Try it. Check out the newbie posts in the ubuntu forums. If you like it, you can install it.
There will be information about a free partition tool you can download to wipe out Linux IF you don't like it.
Try it this way. This distro is a configured desktop, much like WIN. Linux can see everything on the WIN side, but WIN cannot see all the files on the Linux side.
I've enjoyed ubuntu. It never wiped out XP. NOTE: the beta M$ Vista WILL wipe out XP.

if you install linux, it would then wipe XP from the system, but if you just wanna try Linux, try looking up "Linux Knoppix-STD" it is a free verson of Linux that will actually boot up with a CD. All you do is download the files, burn them to CD, and Linux runs straight from the CD, and XP stays on the computer.
To start up normally...just take the disk out, and you're running XP again. This method is also used to steal a file called SAM, that stores your Windows Passwords into a file, and using Linux, you can copy the file, take it home, and find the password (but we won't get into that :-)) Just make sure that if you are going to use the Linux CD, you don't leave it at the disposal of a computer wizz.
You can also have a working copy of the CD mailed to you for a fairly cheap price. Just do some google searches...you'll find something.

you prefer to place in a clean reproduction of XP from the CD on the boot of the computer. enable homestead windows to format the stress and it will delete the Dev partition and deploy. once you twin Linux and XP, you will desire to install XP first. homestead windows won't format a tension for the Dev and could basically format a homestead windows partition, which will delete Linux. Linux can placed a Dev partition on the HD without making use of the completed HD and then will circulate away the XP put in. you would be dividing your HD for twin boot. All desktops do not boot from USB. you will desire to circulate into your set up and decide boot from USB. A OS won't run until eventually it rather is booted from commence up.

The best option is to download MS Virtual PC, this will allow you to run Linux in any flavour without needing to reformat or partition the drives.
Its avail free from Microsoft.
I can recommend it as I use it to test new programs without wrecking my hard drive.
The link below points directly to the download site, also look for the documentation on this site and download it.

Insert CD... follow directions...
... I would suggest a dual-boot since you've never used it before.
