The lord of the rings trilogy.
It is the first time that a sci fi/fantasy book has been treated with the respect it deserved. So many are dumbed down to make them more broadly attractive that they are not recognisable from the book.
2001 a space oddessy come a close second.

Stargate. It was based on Egyptian culture and it gave us a theory on a question that man has never been able 2 fully answer. The pyramids (in the movie) were actually built by a alien race 4 landing pads 4 their ships. Plus all the great action this movie rocks

I like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" because it makes me feel so nostalgic for old timey horror movies that I sought out during my childhood in the early 80's, just because it was so rare back then on TV.
