You can start off on one of the many free websites that are available online, I listed them in the sources below.
All of them have some part of their site that is free if not all of it. Some you might have to register for or some others might only give you a free trial (for a couple weeks).
You could also visit your local public library. If you live near any middle-size to large cities the public library should have geneology resources available and/or the reference staff should be able to help you in getting the resources you need to help create your family tree.
