"This country" is a state of freedom and a promise of same for future generations to come. If no one is willing to step up and protect our G*D given right to live free, then someday, we won't. "This country" is a lot of things; a state of mind, a state of being, a unity in patriotism, "This Country" is a way of life. "This Country is a Red, White and Blue banner" that makes me smile with pride each and every time I see one waving at me.
"This Country" is America and if you're lucky enough to reside in this great nation, then your soldier's are protecting your right to question what they do, to judge what they do, to love who you choose and be what you want: to say what you feel, or not a thing, a right to bear arms and a right to pursue happiness.
There's a lot you have to be thankful for everyday that obviously goes un-noticed. You my dear ARE the protected, and FREEDOM is a flavour the protected will NEVER know.
Be thankful for that especially.

You are asking for a discussion of an English word, "country," that is, therefore, also a concept (Every word denotes an underlying concept). It may be difficult to grasp some English concepts if you have not yet grasped English grammar (since complete concepts are usually best expressed in complete sentences. Nevertheless, I will try my best....

The English word "country," used in the sense that you are using it denotes an analogous concept to the Latin, "patria," or Greek, "patrida." "Country" is the collection of individuals with shared values, heritage and geographical proximity who wish to afilliate themselves with each other for mutual gain. This is distinct from some ethnic or religious groups who may be related, but not by choice. Even a dictatorship can be called a country if enough of its citizens acquiesce to this form of government. (i.e. a certian key minimum number choose not to rebel). "Country" is distinct from "country-side" which simply denoptes rural landscape. "State" and "Country" can be used as synonymns in the context you are presenting. In a federation or republic the word "state" can also be used to denote a local/regional administrative level of a country's government. It is true that, from time to time, the "country" may call you to act in ways that are superficially contrary to your good. For instance, taxes do not benefit most people directly every time they are paid. Being drafted into military service certainly does not directly benefit the draftee. However, such actions are required becasue they are felt to provide benefits in keeping with the principles on which the country was founded. Failure to comply with such demands is either to act in such a way that show you no longer feel that the ocuntry is acting in its own best interest (civil disobedience) or pure criminal behavior. How much an action may go against an individual's gain is dictated by the type of state.

Whether or not an individual acquiesces to the state's demand depends on (at least) the individual's level of citizenship and how close the demand correlates to the ideas on which the coutnry was founded. For instance, a suicide bomber from an Islamic country may intentionally kill himself or even kill a family member by ordreeof the coutnry to which he belongs. This should not be surprising becasue: (1) An Islamic country may have well-founded religious reasons for ordering suicide attacks or patricide, (2) Such a country demands an increased level of submission compared to some western countries, (3) The individual usually feels a sense of patriotism (and, in this case, probably even more a religious calling), (4) The individual will judge that the country's order is in keeping with the principles on which the coutnry was founded. On the other hand, a Canadian soldier, for example, if ordered to be a suicide bomber, would likley refuse since she would probably see such an order to run contrary to the priciples on which her country was founded.
