Yes, I hate going to the GP Although some are better than others.
No way would I want to take any prescription-only drugs unless I'd been examined in person by the GP. I hate taking any form of drug, bar caffeine and alcohol, and only do so if absolutely necessary.
You can get a first diagnosis from the nhsdirect website.

I am from England but live in Thailand and I am so glad that I do for the reason you mentioned. Here we can buy all prescription drugs over the counter at any pharmacy without a prescription. Really for many things prescriptions are entirely unnecessary and just a means for doctors to extort money.
For example. I have high cholesterol so I have to take 3 tablets of Bezalip every day for all my life. I should also get my blood cholesterol checked once a year.
Doctors in England will usually only issue a one month prescription, even though they make no month by month physical checks. The doctor in England himself told me that this is so the pharmacy and surgery are not deprived of income because they would make less if he issued me with less prescriptions for larger amounts of tablets. So I have the disruption of having to sit with those sick people and wait in the surgery every month, and pay more for my prescription, for no medical reason whatsoever, just so the health service can make more money from me.
Even for standard antibiotics there is no need for such tight control. If you go to the doctor with a sore throat, and if the doc is feeling in a sympathetic mood, you will be preseribed ampicillin or amoxicillin. Why we are not allowed to treat our own sore throats is beyond me, are we so infantile that we are not allowed any control at all over our own medical treatment? Looks to me like it is about cash again.

LOL! If you are getting drugs chances are you are sick too and probably with the same thing everyone else has.
Drugs won't work on a lot of the common things so you are better off staying home and resting, drinking plenty of fluids and taking a masking drug like panadol or ibuprophen.
If they are repeat scripts then you don't have to see the GP until the refill runs out.
Just remember the more you toss in your body the more likely you are to build up immunity to the drug and when you really need it it won't work.

Hey...you have a choice ... don't go to the GP!
I don't think we are ready for self-diagnosis.

If you need medication, then you are ill yourself, or at the very least have an illness that is controlled by medication.
