These thoughtful questions are harder than the puns you know. ;-)
Love is the answer but there are different kinds of love, and I think the greatest is love that seeks the highest good of its beloved. This love is completely unselfish and very difficult. I love my oldest son and sometimes that means I have to let him be angry with me. I saw him yesterday for the first time in a month. He's been sulking because I would not enable him to be financially irresponsible. It would have been easier to just give him what he wanted, but not best in the long run for him. I like to please people so it is hard for me to practice the tough love. If I didn't love him as much as I do, I couldn't do it. I often fail at this kind of love because I'm selfish. I don't want to feel badly and put that ahead of doing what's best.
I am certain that as a father, you understand this one. Hard to hold the line when you hear: "Everyone else gets to do this! You are so mean!"

Your presence vs. presents.
The material things fade in memory. They get left in a box under your bed or show up in a garage sale years down the road. But the impression you leave on someone by "being there" leaves an indelible mark in their mind and in their heart.
With your presence comes many messages:
That you are willing to give your time to someone just because you can.
That the love is deep. So deep that there is no thought or question ever as to where you would rather be. It just naturally is with the one you are with.
Permanence. Living without doubt or fear is such a great gift. And your presence sends this message.
So when I think about a gift for another......I think of what I need more than anything else. I always think the same thing......I don't need their presents........I so need their presence!
