throttle position sensor is junk...it will shut off the gas soon as you let off the throttle

You are a bit vague, but there are a couple of items to check here.
The beginning is to start with the diagnostics.
Does the "Check Engine" light come on when this occurs?
If it does, take it to either a repair facility or try a discount parts store (AutoZone, Advanced, Kragen etc) and ask that the retrieve the Diagnostic trouble codes.
Write them down.
Then give them to your husband, dad, brother, boyfriend or if you have the wherewith-all to follow through with it, obtain the repair manual for the Explorer, and follow the PROPER diagnostic and repair procedure. Don't cut corners and merely throw parts under the hood. This is very inefficient and expensive.
If you can get a friend to keep it running while you open the hood and listen closely to the engine. Do you hear a pronounced "HISS" anywhere under the hood. If you can, locate it and repair the vacuum leak. It could be a broken vacuum line, or one that simply blew off a nipple when the engine backfired. That is about all I can do fo you with what you said, but it is a start.

Good Luck

Maybe you should get the ODBII codes read, even if the check engine light isn't on.

It sounds like a vacuum or MAF sensor problem, but at this point it's all a guess.
If this just started, check you gas cap for tightness, try a can of drygas to make sure it's not condensation in the fuel.
Check around the engine intake manifold and air cleaner to make sure no hoses have come off.

It is a gas problem, either the fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel injector. One of those is glogged or going out on you. The fuel pump seems the most likely cause though normally if it goes out it goes out completely and stepping on the gas doesn't help for long. I would start with changing the fuel filter, then if that doesn't work go after fuel pump. Last but not least cleam the fuel injectors or the carburetor, which ever you have.

well i had a car that did that and it was the fuel pump going out of it and the fuel pump is in the tank that or it could be that the line is stopped up its letting a little gas through but not enough or the fuel injectors is playing out them is some some the things that could be wrong with it i buy and sale cars all the time and i ran across then problems before so good luck

Your question does not really provide enough info to properly diagnose your problem. If the vehicle runs fine other than not being able to idle, I would start with the idle air control motor better known as an IAC. This actuator opens to control the idle speed by letting air into the throttle body, if it is stuck and doesn't work, you get no idle.

well first it is a Ford thats the mian problem....j/k...lol. Try cleaning the fuel injectors with injector treatment in your gas. I think you need a new fuel pump though

Most likely a bad Throttle Position Sensor. (It is NOT a vacuum leak, if so the engine would race, not stall)

Sounds like a timing issue. Get a tune up.
