It was ineptly brought up by the Gore campaign in the last week of the election and came across as being a smear job.
A better politician would have been able to get some investigative reporters to start looking into it at an earlier date--let it build momentum--there would be articles on all the denials--the other drunken incidents, etc. and then it would have become a big issue.
If the tables had been reversed you can be sure the Bush campaign would have handled it that way.

Do Americans know how much the world hates them because of Bush ... surely they aren't going to vote him in again!
Whilst Clinton was in power, Americans were seen as a kewl nation but that Bush fella is just a fool.

You answered your own question with the link you provided, of course. But I would still like to point out that, as time goes on, you will find more and more people getting elected to office who have criminal records, and who have done things in their past that are morally reprehensible. There is simply a decline in the average American's standards. "So he did a few drugs. So what? Haven't we all?" *nudge nudge wink wink* "So he slept with one of his female aids. So what? Don't we all need a little nookie?" *nudge nudge wink wink* ad infinitum...

It's actually very simple. He is a Conservative Christian and the Conservative Christian population, which is very large, would rather have someone with a criminal record than someone who won't make decisions based directly off of the Bible.
Besides, 48% of the Country voted for him while 49% voted for Al Gore. So he didn't exactly win the election, he just got by on a technicality.

Because Bush carried the most electoral votes in 2000 and 2004, and that's how it works.

I have yet to understand how he got elected! It amazes me how people voted for him in the first place. Were they blind and dumb? We are the most hated country since he took office! Our faith in our own government have gone down hill! Many soldiers have lost their life and for what? When will our soldiers come home to their families? So many questions and no answers from our President! I guess you could say he was elected because of his RECORD!

whatever the case may be it's best not to ask these kinds of questions because what the government does not want the public to know they will do anything to "silence" someone who is looking for an answer as to reasons they have for allowing these types of things to happen. God bless.
