I bought a pair of inexpensive rackets but I've been using a friend's more expensive, lighter racket. It feels better but I'm not really sure if I'm getting the same amount of power in my smashes. Which is better, and what other factors are important in racket selection?

Depends on if you play a power or finesse game.

For power you need a heavier racket, for finess you want lighter

depends what kind of way you play. slightly heavier, and stiffer, rackets are meant for offense (doubles). When playing men's doubles, you switch between offensive and defensive more. In mixed, the guy usually stays in the back (offensive) unless somehow he's forced to play defensive, the girl is meant to be in the front for defensive. in girls doubles, you also switch more. girls should typically use lighter rackets so they won't be stressing their wrists from using a stiff racket. guys can use a stiffer or balanced racket. rarely does a guy use a lighter racket; some younger boys may use one though. you can smash pretty well with a balanced racket, and sometimes better with an offensive stiff racket. its recommended that you don't get a stiff racket because they can cost more and you can injure your wrist. my friend plays very well with a balanced one, but will switch to his stiff one on occasions. it all depends on you.

Lighter...lighter is better
for myself....there is a balance between my hand and the racket that I look for when choosing
and your question is relative to individual preferences
and styles

I use a heavier racket because i have a tendancy to hit the birdie harder.
