money stolen from motel safe by owner paid some back owes more and stopped paying. it's been almost a year from time money was stolen each month he has paid except for the last two months how long do i have to report this to the police? i was a renter at motel.

You should report this NOW... Statute is 2 years if it is under 2,000

Who's money? His own? That is not a crime.

And who has he been paying? Himself? You?

If he has been paying you back then it is a loan and you accepted terms and payments. He may be delinquent but he is no longer a thief. He is a debtor.

All you can do is take him to small claims court and show the payments as proof that he owes you the rest of the money. The problem is I doubt you have any proof of how much money he took and how much he still owes you. Plus loans normally charge interest so you may have problems proving he hasn't paid it all back.

And, how pray tell do you know he took the money if you are only a renter? A judge is going to ask that one. Be prepared to answer it. You should have reported him right away.

I doubt the police would take your complaint given your story as it is.
