I have a kinda funky audiovox mp3 player, and I am thinking about getting a new one. I have always been kind of anti-ipod because I've heard alot of bad things about them and I think the accessories are extremely overpriced. But they are the most popular (my opinion), so they must be doing something right. Sooooo...

1. Are i-tunes/ipods really as bad as I've heard?

and

2.If not ipod, what's better?

I was also thinking acout a Creative Labs Zen.

Thanks!

The Zen is pretty cool. I don't see anything wrong with the iPod
though. A way to remove iTunes from the equation is to use XPlay, which can take music from your Windows Media Player library and can put it on a variety of mp3 players, including ipods. However, XPlay is not free, it is around $20

I have an ipod and itunes and can't say it is bad at all. You do need to have the specifications on your computer that the box specifies. I think when computers crash, it is not because of the itunes, but because they are overworking the machine.

Itunes is easy to use, self explanatory and really effective at it's filing in libraries. I would rather live without my microwave than without my ipod. I enjoyed mine so much that my dad bought one for my mom (who thought she didn't want one) and now she feels the same way. Even she can navigate itunes without problems. We have sent her data file disks with music on them, and she has no trouble transferring the data to music files and putting them on her ipod.

Lastly, because ipods hold so much of the market, they really do have the most options and extras. If you are worried about the price of the accessories (which are pretty hefty) look at a site like ebay and you can get some great deals. Also, as the ipod's popularity has grown, the market for accessories has also grown. There are more and more lower priced accessories showing up in local stores.

I would go ipod! I love mine!

Thankfully someone who has not been sucked in by the iPod hype. Itunes is slow and cumbersome, you will regret putting it on your computer. And of course an iPod will work with nothing else. I have a Dell mp3 player which works good for me, creative makes good ones also, so does Rio.

They are popular, because they just plain work and whatever flaws are indentified Apple fixes them. Certainly there are alternatives that are work just as well. In some cases they are just as pricey as any iPod.

Creative Labs and Sandisk are good alternatives. Microsoft is also coming out with their own MP3 player and music download service.
