For the long answer, I think people that made mega production houses successful, probably worked their way up from lowly "P.A." (production assistant, aka slob or scab hah). Check out your library and see if you can borrow books about a biography of George Lucas or Jerry Bruckheimer, or Spielberg for example.
That's where I'd start.
