I don't know about the richest, but Alabama, Mississippi, and Arkansas are the 3 poorest states

I believe Connecticut is the richest and Arkansas is the poorest. CT because most of the big banking and financial establishments are headquartered there - make it number one despite it's small size and population.
It just comes down to job and economic opportunities, I think.

richest is easily California ,taken by itself it is 4th largest economy in the world-poorest average or "Mean" income is west viginia ,biggest gap would be florida-rual NW Florida is poor and rural where Miami is super rich on the GOLD COAST by any standards also factor in poor fruit pickers and that has to be biggest gap
