It's been shutting off and coming right back on(like when the lights flicker) without having to manually turn it on for a while now. What's causing it to do this. This is the first time it shut off and didn't come right back on.

Either your monitor is running hot or your video card is. Pay attention to the light on your monitor. Does the light completely shut off or does it turn from green to yellow when the monitor shuts off?

Could also be a bad video connection. Check the cable that runs from your monitor to your computer and be sure it firmly plugged in and the two screws are tight.

Check your computer case for any non-working fans. If you have no fans, it would be a good contribution to keeping your computer in good shape.

This problem can be caused by a bad connection between your monitor and video card. If your monitor can't detect the signal from your video card it will go into standby mode (the power light is amber instead of green). Check that the cables are secure and clean. Also keep in mind that it might not be your monitor at all and may be a problem with your video card. Swap monitors with a friend for a couple days if the problem persists you need a new video card if goes away with a different monitor then you need a new monitor. If money is an issue you can usually find decent used ones for about $20.

Certain brands of monitors are defective...like hp. Your monitor might turn off at any time then be on but the screen goes black. This is a factory defect.
