Coach John L. Smith has seemed to have a consistant problem season after season. After a loss, he can't get his team focused. Two seasons ago the Spartans started the season 3-0, ended 4-8. Last season started 4-0, ended 5-7. This season started 3-0, lost to Notre Dame to go 3-1, then lost to Illinois (questionably the worst team in the Big Ten) and are now 3-2. The next two weeks are Michigan and Ohio State, so with how we played today they need a miracle to not be 3-4 in two weeks. When the Spartans are focused they can compete with anyone in the leaque, last season holding with Ohio State for much of the game, losing to Michigan in overtime and beating Notre Dame. This season dominating Notre Dame until the 4th Quarter. Since that 4th quarter we've only had two offensive touchdowns. Should Michigan State fire John L. Smith for not being able to stay consistant. And if so, should they persue Steve Mariouchi?

I just went and looked up the site: www.firejohnlsmith.com, but some douche purchased the site so no one could use it for it's true reason, as a sounding board to help get rid of a coach that makes Bobby Williams look like Bo Schembechler.

To answer your question, I don't think MSU has a chance to beat UofM with or without JLS, so they may as well ride it out for the rest of the season. And yet again, next year will be the rebuilding of the program...again. However, don't be too surprised when this name starts to pop up as the replacement for JLS...former Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci. Let's see, his best friend is hoops head coach Tom Izzo, he is from the U.P., and the college game is a much better fit for Mooch in comparisson to the NFL.

He definitely has the name recognition (unfortunately, not all of it positive) to recruit and would be able to draw upon Izzo to help bring in better talent then Smith has done.

Anything (outside of bringing back Bobby Williams) would be better then the current situation. I truly feel sorry for Drew Stanton because if he was on a team like Penn State or Oklahoma, they would be top 5 teams. Javon Ringer and Jehuu Caulcrick are great RB's in a pass happy system. Somehow Izzo is able to get the most out of Matt Trannon, but Trannon's true talents on the football field continually go unused.

I HIGHLY recommend visiting this site if you are a Sparty fan or feel embarassed about the job he is doing.

No, I do not think they should fire Smith. They should fire the assistant coaches. If you look at the U of M last year they did not do very well. They fired their assistant coaches and brought back 5 assistant coaches from their hay day. Michigan is now the second best team in the country (even if they are only ranked #7).

The Spartans looked great against Notre Dame, the players just lost focus because they thought they already won (same thing happened last year with OSU and Texas).

Yes, after the loss yesterday and the collapse last week it is clear he is not big ten caliber. Looks like he can recruit because his teams can play, but wow, how do you lose 2 weeks in a row like his team has and not get fired. with the likes of Ohio State and Michigan at the top and the Wisconsin and Iowa a tier below you gotta keep pace.

It goes beyond John L. The entire program is still infected with Perlesitis.
