do you think america is too easy on criminals? i don't think we're hard enough on criminals. for instance my cousin was murdered and his killer is only serving 15 years but you know damn well he'll be out sooner than that. you hear about people going away for having a little bit of drugs on them or being at the wrong place at the wrong time. isn't there something wrong w/that? why do they continue to let molesters out? they continue to molest when they get out. i don't understand our justice system. my friend got murdered too and i'm sure her ex bf will get 15 years too. what a shame. her family will never see her again. why do they get a second chance if their victims never will?

I for one don't understand how anyone who murders someone else can get only 15 years for taking the life of another while after that time do they expect the murdered victim to come back?
!5 years is a mighty small price to pay for taking a life and to even think the murderer could get out before the 15 years is up is really wrong, the murderer should at least remain in prison the remainder of his/her life and die there too and never see the outside of prison again.
I believe that the punishment should always fit the crime and the worse the crime the worse the punishment should be, no less them the crime.
Anyone who breaks the law, no matter what the crime should remain behind bars until the victims say where to leave the criminals out and not before.
If the victim is murdered and can't speak for him/herself then the murderer must remain behind bars until death and not be let out ever because the victim can not come back to why should the murderer be released at all?????
Yea, unfortunately this country is way to lenient on criminals and that's saying to those who might commit serious crimes in their life that they will be allowed to live outside prison in just a few years so go ahead and commit any crime you want to and I also believe the laws need to be toughened up a whole hell of a lot now before to many criminals are set free to commit even worse crimes on innocent people again.

I fully agree! As a society, children/young people, women and minorites are generally undervalued. (God forbid a black female child be assaulted because that person will likely never get justice) Its a fact that unless the molester commits numerous crimes along with the molestation or many children are molested, he/she will not get a sentence that we all feel is justified. I dont get how in 3 strike states people can get life in prison for stealing a car, then mugging someone, and then stealing a pack of gum- then someone rapes a 5 year old and they get 2 years and are out in 6 months. It boggles the mind. The only answer is to lobby your congressional representatives and state government for stronger sentences for sex crimes and murder. Maybe some day we will get it. "We" being society in general. I doubt it though. It's sad, but thats the country we choose to live in. I love my country. I served it in the military and now I serve my community in law enforcement. My husband went to Iraq as a Marine and now is a law enforcement officer as well. We are big patriots, but one of the great things about being an American is that you can be proud of your country but also see its shortcomings. The greatest thing about it is that you have the right to do something about it. Voice your opinion not only here but to those who can help make a change. Good luck and I'm sorry for your loss(es).

Eye for and eye is a Biblical term, but as a Christian, it was done in the old testament and therefore is not the same.

Since Jesus came to this earth and saved us, you must put the fate of them in the hands of the Lord.
I do believe that the Lord has given us the right to punish evil-doers.

I do think we give way too much for the convicted Murderers. I think that they should get life for the first time they kill, IF it was premeditated, or if it was done in the commissioning of a crime. That is IF the death penalty does not come first. If they get the death penalty, then give them a year to fight it. If they can not prove something went wrong during the trial or prove they really are Innocent, then death penalty should be swift.. I think a bullet to the head should be the fastest and cheapest method. Also least painful. They die fast and never know they died.

Sorry for your loss! I do think the US judicial system needs to be tougher on criminals. Convicted murderers should be put away forever if not executed. As far as rapists the laws need to change. Terms for convicted molestars and rapists should be increased. People like that should go away for a long time. Problem is there are so many criminals out there and the jails are becoming over loaded. Imagine what we could do with all the money being used to rebuild Iraq! I bet you we would not have a problem with our jails and lack there of!

I believe that the severity of the punishment should match the severity of the crime. But I also believe that there are good reasons to distinguish between "murder" and "manslaughter" or between "murder in the first degree" or "murder in the second degree," and so on. So to say that every person who has caused the death of another person (except for accidents and justifiable actions) should themselves also be put to death is quite an over-simplification. The current system takes a great many factors into account. And I certainly don't have enough information, based just on what you've told us about your tragedies, to come to any kind of conclusion that both killers who you are talking about deserved heavier sentences.

I'm not one for promoting death penalty. However, if there were more public executions, I'm sure it would put a stamp in the peoples minds not to stray to the illegal side. The bloodier the better. Let people know - stay in line. All prisoners should be forced to watch the public executions as well to imprint that penalty upon them should they dare to ever commit another crime (for those fortunate enough to get leniency).

yeah... it's messed up as far as the drug laws go... a dealer will get like 50 years when a murderer or molester gets like 5... that's messed up...

I don't like drug dealers, but give me 20 of them for every murderer or molester...

but this is one of the great questions... I think that we are suppose to forgive those that transgress... but how do you forgive a moster?...

I wish I had an answer...

I think the law should be that if you murder someone, you are automatically sentenced to LIFE in prison, no bail, no exceptions (if found guilty).
