The gas furnace is about 30-35 years old. I know what you're going to say..............., but it's working fine. I just would like to save some money, as to not have the pilot light run all the time.

As a HVAC professional, you are best to keep an old funace such as yours as it was designed to run.
Your system is at best maybe 60% efficienct. If this is the case your sending 40 cents for every dollor of energy up the chimney to get 60 cents of heat.
Your better off going with a new 80% two stage fuance for heat.
Get 3 estiamtes, and go for the middle guy.
But get at least 3 good references to check out before signing any contracts.
Good Luck

These are some good common sense suggestions in the answers above me, but I will answer your question directly.

You would need to replace the gas control valve with a model that would be compatible with direct ignition (hot surface igniter), or intermittent pilot (pilot only comes on when there is a call for heat); in either case you will need an electronic ignition module (brain box). Depending on the configuration of your furnace, you would also need a number of electronic safety devices. In most cases the cost of parts and installation would far out weigh the benefit.

To just ball park some numbers, you could easily have $300.00 in parts and $150.00 in labor, and I think those numbers are conservative depending on the type of unit you have.

leave it the way it is not worth the money. also have a co2 test ran on it something that old has a very good chance of the heat exchanger cracking the gases can kill you they are odor less so you can't smell them
a new furnace can save you 20-30% on your gas bill
$200.00 gas bill can go down to $140.00 - $160.00 it wont take long to pay for itself.

Not worth it. The little money you save will never be recouped from the outlay. Better to put that money towards a new unit in two years.
