I bought a Swiffer Carpet Flick about three months ago, because my kids are always dropping crumbs and stuff on the carpet..It's really nice for a quick clean-up, but it doesn't do a really thorough job, and it certainly doesn't replace a vaccuum..but for quick pick up for crumbs, plant soil, etc. I think it does a pretty good job.

most of those things only get the surface dirt off. Sounds like you have a Berber carpet...dirt still falls down to the pad underneath so, if you really want your carpet clean...the old-fashioned vacuum is the only way to go.
Try an Oreck. Theyre expensive but, it'll probably live longer than you will!
plus, you never know where you may move to in the future...a good quality vac is a good investment.
