If a miscarriage did occur & I didn't realize it, would THAT show up on a pap smear? Would it have anything to do with atypical cells, if there was inflammation?
atypical cells is what showed up on my pap smear.

Yes, if it happens before you realize you are pregnant. It will just seem like an extra heavy period.

It's unlikely that a miscarriage would have caused the atypical cells unless the miscarriage was going on during the pap smear itself--and even then, it's not terribly likely. The doctor is more than likely going to do more testing to discover the cause of the atypical cells--try not to worry too much, it could be nothing.

yes it can occure without you knowing it. Once again, pregnancy has nothign to do with pap smears or irregular cells.. pregnancy can only be detected thru hormones which occur in your blood, or thru an ultrasound. Atyipical cells can mean STDs, cancer, HPV. But for what its worth, labs process a LOT of pap smears in a day and are sometimes wrong.. have it repeated.. I had a pap show up as atypical and went thru a colpolscopy.. Im sorry i did , b/c it was WRONG. i shouldve just had a repeat pap.

I had-had a normal period in may of 2005 and then 4 days later i started bleeding (not heavy) and hurting in my stomach and back. My husband and my mom both had me believing i was having 2 periods in a month (which i never do but thought that was what it was)
I finally went to the er after 6 days of this and they done a blood test on me and i was pregnant. (I did not even know it) but they knew something was wrong by my blood test so they done an ultrasound and nothing was in my womb/uterus. I had already miscarried.
I was put in the hospital overnight just to be kept an eye on and the next day when i got out of the hospital i was not hurting or bleeding.
So if i hadn't of never gone to the ER i wouldn't have known i was even pregnant. (I was 5 weeks along)

When i miscarried carried though thinking back i had pains in my back and stomach. I was so tired. When i did bleed it was not heavy at all. The blood was from red to light red to brown.

I did not require a D&C or anything like that..It was completely expelled (fetus) from my body. (No tissue or clots came out of me either)

A pregnancy test can show you have been pregnant if you take one within 8 weeks of giving birth or a miscarriage due to the pregnancy hormone still in your system. Also in your blood.

When you have a miscarriage and don't know about it -it is called a missed abortion.

Good luck

Yes, this is possible. Early in your pregnancy however. You may think it was a skipped period that "suddenly" showed up and a little bit heavier than normal possibly. But if you are two months and on no you would definitely notice. I miscarried my first I was ever preggy with. I carried for 12 weeks but the baby had died at 9 and my body had just begun to reject the dead fetus at 12 weeks (3 months) - devastating - but I had wonderful, caring doctors.

My gyno told me that many women miscarry and never even realize they are pregnant. It's very common. I don't know about the effect on a pap smear though. I can't imagine that it would. Ask your doctor. Ask the nurse.

I suggest having a gynecologist do an examination and run a series of tests for HPV and other STDs. I asked my wife and she said it is unlikely you would have had a miscarriage without knowing.
