Then it would't be there and so the first place I looked would then become the last.

You are talking about comparison. To compare some thing we must have two things or items such as, Black or White, Good or Bad, First or last etc.

In your case, without looking at first place you don't know which one is the last place. Therefore, you could not go to the last place directly without being at the first place.
Otherwise change your question in to something else will you?

If you look at the last place first, the last would no longer be last but becomes first.

well i would hope it would be the last place i looked because then i would look like an idiot looking for something i already found.

how can u look there first if its always in the last place u look?

well...... yes. sometimes it helps to retrace your steps to the last place you had, used ,or placed that item. it makes for perfect common sense.
