A good wood burning stove, fireplace insert with a fan/blower. Or in my house we use this great kerosene heater that heats up the entire house wonderfully! At night time when you're ready for bed make sure to keep the heater down and use extra blankets on the bed (not electric, just nice thicky heavy blankets, comforters, etc.). Also, flannel sheets will keep you warm as well.

The most efficienct way is a heat pump.
If your in a very cold winter climate, like the north east or mid west can be go for a geo thermal unit.
If your in the west or south then a air to air exchange unit is best.
Check with your local utility company to see what they recommend, they can do a energy analis for you in many cases to help.

I HEAT MY HOUSE WITH NOTHING BUT FIREWOOD UNLESS I'M GONE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. I'VE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY ALERGIES USING IT. I HAVE A 'LITTLE BUCK' FIREPLACE INSERT. IT COSTS ME ABOUT $50-60 PER YEAR TO CUT IT ON A FRIEND'S RANCH, CHEAP HEAT! I CAN ALSO HAVE IT CUT AND DELIVERED IF I DON'T WANT TO CUT IT FOR MYSELF. I DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE TEMPERATURE OUTSIDE AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT A DOOR BEING OPEN FOR TWO SECONDS ANYMORE! I USE COTTONWOOD AND PINE AND THEY WORK GREAT AND THE PINE SMELLS NICE. AN ALTERNATIVE WOULD BE A PELLET STOVE BUT I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH THEM. A FRIEND HAS ONE AND LIKES IT.

ive heard that one candle can raise a rooms temperature by 4 degrees. so if you want it 72 degrees in your house and its 30 degrees out side thats just over 10 candles per room. then after your house burns down you wont have to worry about it anymore.

A fire place is economical, if you have lots of firewood near your house.

I'd say a woodstove, but those are bad for asthma/allergies.
