yes

thats a number

a thousand million is a billion

so you could also call it 500 billion

since a thousand billion is a trillion, you could also call 500 billion, half a trillion

you would write it like this 500,000,000,000

or 5 X 10^11

Unfortunately, the answer to this question depends on the language which you're working with.
First, in terms of writing the number out, it can be represented in a number of ways. The most demonstrative is 500,000,000,000 and the most concise is 5 x 10^11.
The number can, in one system of phraseology, be referred to as 500 billion, but in the other, less common, it can't be referred to as anything other than how you stated it, five hundred thousand million.

500 thousand million = 500, 000, 000, 000

500 thousand has 5 zeros, million has 6 zeros, add them all together and you get the number above (500,000,000,000)

which is actually 500 billion because there's a 500, and 9 zeros and a billion has 9 zeros.
So there, it's 500 billion in simplified words.
Hope this answers your question!!

ok, we know what it looks like... the number 5 followed by 11 zeros.
Your friend must have heard this and was confused cos' he must have usually heard Billion (US) used for thousand million.
There is a difference between US Billion (9zeros) and British Billion(12 zeros) but not between US Million and British Million. For global understanding of numbers, the term "thousand million" must have been used is your friend's case to avoid confusion between US Billion and British Billion.
