Do some investigating. Look into The Consumers Reports on printers. People tend to buy Lexmark because of price. In the printing business they are consider the lowest of quality printers. Lexmark made their printer low quality so they could grab the market by offering a low price range. As for the question of long ink life it also depends on what type of printing you are doing (saturation of colour) will effect how long the ink will last.

No printer can sit idle for a length of time. The cartridges themselves are usually good for a year to two years, however, if you do not print regularly, the nozzles become clogged.
Create a document with either three lines of text or 3 small text boxes. Color one red, one yellow, and one blue. Then print this at least once a week or more. It won't use too much ink and is worth (hopefully) preventing the aggravation of streaked lines or colors that do not print correctly.

I use a laser, if you want color is very expensive (Toner), most of the time I only am interested in blk and white copy so laser works fine, and use Samsung 2110. Replacement toner is about 75.00, but will print 3500 sheets.
If color is your thing, stay with inkjet.
