Tolerance, trust, fair and equal treatment for everyone. That seems to be the opposite of fear, distrust and sometimes out and out hatred I've seen from conservatives. I lean a lot to the left... but I could not sleep at night thinking the way some conservatives do. A world where everyone has the right to healthcare, jobs and freedom sounds pretty great to me but .... Okay, I'll leave it there before I say something rude. I'm ex military and have seen a lot and i think the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Liberals are people whose political and social beliefs are on the 'left' of the politcal scale. They are generally tolerant of other cultures and beliefs and people. Some far left elements beleive in Socialism over free market. That is to say some wouldn't mind the government taking care of the poor and disabled. Some people do not like liberals because of negative views they have about these social concerns. Someone who only likes free market would dislike liberals for accepting that taxes must be made to pay for things like Welfare and Medicaid and other programs that help those who are poorer or disabled. Liberals are more into freedom and most of us believe in a woman's right to choose an abortion over being forced to have a child she had not planned for. Some would say that this shows/encourages immorality and/or lack of 'respect' for life.

Liberals are people who believe that all people (even the unemployed, those denied citizenship, the ill....) are valuable and worthy of respect and some degree of humane assistance if necessary. Generally, they prefer 'the good of the group' over uncontrolled capitalism at all costs.

Conservatives fear that liberal policies will be too expensive.

Perhaps the best way to understand a liberal is to contrast it with what a conservative is:

A liberal believes that most people are basically inept and morally inferior. They believe that we need them to show us the way. Liberals believe that we need them to protect us from ourselves. They also believe high taxes are the only way to ensure that our money gets spent responsibly, because we certainly can’t be trusted to do so. They expect everyone to agree with them because of their obvious moral and intellectual superiority but when faced with someone who disagrees with them liberals use emotional manipulation full of slander and name calling to win political debates.

Conservatives on the other hand believe in the basic goodness, capability and potential of all people and that the there is no need for a Federal nanny to take care of us. The best thing that government can do for the people is stay out their way. Conservatives believe in everyone’s right to express their opinion even if it’s not politically correct and win debates based on logic and reason.
