I have a Sony Vaio laptop, and I am currently trying to fix my fairly old Dell desktop to have a second computer in the house. Every time I start the computer up an alert comes up in the bottom right hand corner saying "Windows has detected your computer is infected with spyware, please click here to learn how to protect your computer". So I click on it, and nothing happens. I click off on the alert and it pops up 30 seconds later saying the same thing. I can't right click it to close it, and I already went through the security center to try and disable alerts, but this still comes up!! I've already scanned and protected my computer with McAfee, so thats not the problem. I'm about to throw this thing out the window, so if any of you guys have any idea how to get rid of this blasted alert, PLEASE let me know! Thanks!!

Yes, as most answerers suggested, It IS a spyware, not windows, displaying alerts. So first of all go back and turn on the windows alerts back.Again DONOT click on the popup/alert u are mentioning. The popup/alert itself is a spyware. Again, u may have to download a good antispyware program such as Spybot - Search and Destroy or Lavasoft's AdAware SE to remove the spyware. Get Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org and AdAware SE from http://www.lavasoft.de

McAfee didnot and willnot detect this because, it not a virus. It is a spyware/adware program. Antivirus softwares never detect spyware/adwares. So download Spybot and/or AdAware or any other good and safe spyware removal software.
For better scanning options, scan in windows safe mode(press F8 repeatedly during computer startup)viruses and spywares are most vulnerable in safe mode.

I suspect it IS a spyware!Well the best option is to download a good antispyware, a nice antivirus(U hav McAfee, so no problem) and a powerful firewall(ZoneAlarm is worth trying, u will hate Mcafee firewall after that). Here are their links:

Are you talking about the red shield with a white X in it?

I see someone said to use trend micro. I would suggest against it because of problems ive had with them. I used their program and it said half of my anti spy and my firewall was rated bad. So yeah, just fair warning.

I hate as quickly as I say, "thank you," and obtain a reaction of, "No concern." Gee, i did no longer think of it replace right into a concern. I additionally proceed hating to take heed to 39 reiterations of "like" in sentences, and detest "bypass" substituting badly for "suggested." and don't even get me started on "way" getting used particularly than "very" and "plenty." Oh, and that's turning out to be to be a virulent disease for human beings to apply double previous-stressful shape, which includes "you could desire to have went." And speaking of "went," i latterly heard somebody bastardize "bypass" into the previous stressful "bypass'ed"
