The lipid-bilayer around each of our cells is a selective membrane. It allows gasses like O2 and CO2, and lipid soluble molecules to pass. But things like ions, water, and other molecules must pass through ion channels. this is important since the cell must be selective in order to survive and to maintain the resting membrane potential. For recognition there are local hormones produced, and receptor molecules very specific for hormones and cell to cell communication. The plasma membrane is not highly folded it is 2 layers of lipids.
