I went throught the same thing when I was 17, except it was in southern california; I moved from Santa Monica to Inglewood, which is basically South Central L.A.
No matter how you play it, you're gonna have to take some s h i t from the brothers. Just accept that fact. Whatever you do, don't act better than anyone else, don't act superior. Stay low-key. If you own nice threads or toys. like a cell, IPod, bling, shoes, leave 'em at home and dress down. A new rich kid will lose anything nice he brings to school. Now matter how cool you are, even if they sorta like you, they're gonna take it, cuz they're gonna think you're showing off.(You didn't say if you were still in school or not so I assume you are.) But most of the same rules apply.
Take your due amount of verbal ****, but don't be a wimp. The first time you get smacked, hit back, hard and fast. You might get a butt-whipping but it will be worth it and they'll leave you alone after that. If you don't hit back you're gonna be branded as a p u s s y and things will be worse.
NEVER go to the authorities. Fend for yourself. Don't be a loner--they'll take that as a sign you think you're better than them. Join in their convos; sit down with their group. Start-up a convo unasked, even butt-in. That way you show you're tryin' to fit in, and if they tell you to f***-off then do, but chances are after awhile they'll let you hang.
It will be a gradual process but after a few months of paying your dues it should be cool. Good luck.

Oh My God! Are these people serious? Have any of these idiots every been to Detroit? Some how I highly doubt it.
Um, clearly if you come from a rich family, you won't be living in the "nastiest ghetto area." Don't be an idiot like the rest of these people. I live in a decent area of Detroit and it's not that bad. I used to live in Wisconsin, so I can tell you that it's definitely an adjustment, but if you are going to attend college, which is the implication, you're really in for a nice surprise.
First of all let me say that there is NO need to dress in sweats all day, nor to barricade the doors. I wear my designer outfits all the time, as do many of my friends, with Louis Vitton purse and all.
Yes, there are bums, yes there are some idiots who will try to do things to hurt you, but there are a lot more decent people than those who would do ill will. There are also so many good things to experience.
When my mother told me that we were moving to Detroit I thought all the same things that these other ill informed people thought too. But living here has changed me considerably. So, while not on the top of my list, it is no longer completely off.

You must act like you "belong" there, and dont appear terrified everytime you must venture out, having said that, if you are going to be in the area of 6mile & Van Dyke, or Fenkell (5 mile) and Linwood, all bets are off, get a gun, or a mean dog and hope for the best. If this is your first time in Detroit, dont believe all the bad hype, i've lived in Detroit for years and have never had a problem, unless you count the occasional beggar asking for change.

It sound like you will be attending Wayne State University. Wear jeans and sweatshirts. Don't be better than anyone. All people respond to respect. Get to know the clerks in the stores they will become your friends and support. Don't be flashy. Speak when spoken to move quickly with purpose. Don't make eye contact but be aware of where you are and what you have to get done. Try not to be alone. People are people. Make friends but don't be pushy. Don't go looking for trouble won't be none. Pray up each day all day.

First of all, why are you slumming? To answer your question:
Mind your business
Dress down (I mean, down, down..leave the designer duds at home)
No sudden eye contact
Unfortunately, if you're white, unless you dress like a crackhead, you'll stick out like a sore thumb and will be a prime target to getting robbed. My advice is to wear crappy clothes and try to act like you're crazy and on drugs.
More sound advice - STAY OUT OF THE HOOD!

Be cool and low key. Don't be a snob or jerk just because your parents are rich. If I were you, I'd do anything possible to not go. There must be other locations or family you can visit instead.
