Is there a good book or online guide to planning my late spring trip?

If you don't have AAA get it! Not only do they offer you great roadside assistance, you will also get discounts on hotels and restaurants. Once you are a member you also have access to their online trip planner - which you can use to map out your whole trip w/stops, sights, hotels, etc and they send you the itinerary/map for free through the mail. I used it and it was great!

It all depends on what you want to do/see when you drive cross country.
We knew where we wanted to stop and sight see so we just planned out our route by that.
