disturbing thought - now who would be the jerky, strictly speaking? I would like to think that these great beasts were still alive in this world - so that you and I could go feed them. (hey, you get to look at that 'Rex first...) . IF there was a possibility, IF we might find them, IF trophy hunters did not get in the way - what might we learn? Any dino immune system evolved over tens of millenia we puny humans do not enjoy might give us a chance. IF the dinosaurs were still alive, and IF they hadn't snacked us all up, I would think they were the best contender for a place on this earth. We were prey by design and outlasted those splendid beasts by hiding in holes. If they may exist - then let the giants walk the earth.

It's possible that they still are (look up "mokele-mbembe"), or were alive during the same time as humans thousands of years ago. That's why "dragons" are persistant in stories in so many different cultures. It's only fairly recently that humans have completely ruled out the existance of dragons (dinosaurs) because we killed off most or all of them, or they died off for other reasons (I don't buy into the meteorite theory, but other cataclysmic events such as a flood are possible). Besides that, many modern lizards (such as crocodiles and komodos) could have been classified as dinosaurs, if it weren't for the fact that they are alive (dinosaurs, by definition, are extinct).
I think that if the great big dinosaurs such as the T-Rex were alive today, they wouldn't be as widespread as other animals, but we could easily kill them if necessary (tank + dino = dino jerky). Even low-tech civilizations had no problems taking out large animals like mammoths, and for all we know, our ancestors could have been very intelligent, in addition to being stronger. Genetic mutations over centuries have NOT made us a better species, simply because there aren't such things as beneficial mutations. Don't believe me? Go hang out under the sun for 18 hours a day, or play with some radioactive material. See how your kids turn out :P
To sum up: DInosaurs may not have gone extinct "millions and millions of years ago", and if they were alive and prevalent today, we would turn them into jerky (mmm....dinosaur jerky).
P.S.: Alligators taste good

Birds are indeed dinosaurs. Check out this T Rex like bird that lived in South America:

Then life as we know it would't be the same. It would be like the movie "DINOTOPIA". Watch it and see, its just fabulous. Humans and dinosaurs living in conjucture with each other. Humans have been and will always be the smartest living beings on earth. It wouldnt be difficult to tame those large creatures. We humans have done stanger stuff.....

We probably woudlnt be here today; the K2 extinsion, 65 million years ago opened up doors for small, warm blooded animals, exactly what mammals were - they evolved to fill every void; flying, swimming, walking and of course you and me. dinosaurs could of course still be hiding somewhere - Nessy? although in a sense they are, everytime with birds being their direct desendents.
