I believe one reason the divorce rate is so high is because it is so easy to get married. Any two idiots can run down and get married without even considering what being married means or talking about what they each want from life. Then as time passes they realize they never really knew each other and really have nothing in common and get a divorce. Then they marry the next person to come along and start the cycle all over again.
I am 48, female, and on my second marriage. The first one at 18 lasted four years. The second one at 28 (after being together for five years) is now going on 21 years.

Affairs. Do you need reasons why people have affairs? Because they think they can get away with it. Because they are unhappy at home. Because they're bored with their spouse.
Communication. People work different shifts sometimes. One spouse is home when the other one is working. They just don't spend much time together & they grow apart.
Abuse. Because some men are just plain mean! Ok, and some women. I know 2 men who have done time in jail because their wives hit them and then called the police & said he hit her. Even though the men had the bruises (one took a bottle to the back of the head) the men ended up going to jail.
I'm a 36yo woman & have been very happily married for 16 years.

Fear of divorce is the greatest reason for people not marrying.
It's high because people dont expect problems to arise and they dont deal with them eye to eye. This would be 'communication breakdown' example: Petty problems, such as daily or regular annoyances that each wont bend for...in other words...kindness and acceptance is usually lacking in one or both. Either partner may have gone into the relationship with ideal or perfection type expectations and not able to deal with petty differences or changes that may occur in the relationship such as job, location, new goals, new friends, etc. Lots of bones to throw in to stagger a relationship. They must have a strong bond and goal in mind and good communication skills.
'Money problems' One or both dont handle money matters well which causes strife and each looking for a way out instead of trying to work on it together with patience and compassion and foresight.
'Self centeredness' If only one partner is committed to the marriage/spouse/children and the other is not...this is usually a divorce maker.

Lack of communication and losing touch with each other.
Infidelity because of lack of communication in the first place.
A "fairy tale" expectation of what a marriage is supposed to be when marriage is all about hard work from both sides.

1.) lack of communication
2.) cheating - which probably comes back to #1
3.) when life get tough (bills, kids, stress) some find it easier to walk away instead of working hard to keep the marriage alive - which also probably comes back to #1
