state boundries. the borders of the state, or the "state line". this is kind of an outdated practice in cartography (map making), though. i'd like to see the map you are studying.

the black dots and dashes that you see on any of your maps, is the dividing line where the state ends and the other begins. for example, if you go from west to east ,and i'll use the state of kansas and missouri, well the dividing line ,which is the dashes and dots , shows the place where kansas stopsits border at and missouri starts theirs. that was a very good question to ask ,and i hope this is a very good answer to it. i use the maps a lot for locations i need to find and where they are located.

They're telegraph lines. The dots and dashes are symbols that represent Morse code. The interconnectivity of the lines show the relative path of how a morse code message tapped out on a telegraph line from, say Nevada, travels to get up to New York.

An included section, usually a city or city. the dimensions of the dot will point out the dimensions of the city section. On a greater scale map, you will see cities as reddish blocks or blobs, the dimensions and shape of which approximate the dimensions and shape of the included section itself. That is going decrease back to the reality that such illustrations bypass decrease back to cartographers interior the Mediterranean section, the place the roofs have been produced from reddish clay tiles.
