they use a pentium core duo.

or a couple of resistors and a simple chip about the size of your thumb nail. simple batteries and hopefully if you buy it after 1990 a couple of solor cells so that you never need a battery until long after the buttons wear out first. who knows exactly i'm sure its simple to make but cheaper to buy.

First, calculators use the binary number system, so it's all 0 and 1's. Often a 1 is represented by a high voltage and a 0 by a low voltage, but sometimes it is the other way around, depending of the calculator. There are electronic circuits called 'logic gates' which will manipulate the voltages to do particular tasks. For example, there are circuits called 'full adders' that will take two collections of 0's and 1's and add them in binary. It is also possible to do 'binary coded decimal', where the decimal digits 0-9 are coded by binary and added directly. There are similar circuits for multiplying. For more complicated tasks like trig functions, a whole algorithm of steps is needed based on these basic ones. Once the answer is obtained, there is further circuitry to display the answer in a form we can read.

This is actually material for a whole course or two after the basics of electronic circuits are known. If you are interested in more, find an electronics kit.

Ok..for the serious "math" answer

There are a series of equations...
Taylor and Maclaren Series
Simpson's Rule
etc etc etc

that reduce other math functions to addition
basically, all a calculator can do is add...
subtraction is adding a "negative"
multiplication/division can be expressed as Log numbers
which in tern can be manipulated
trig functions can be expressed as an addition -refer to Taylor and Maclaren series...
log/ln are another addition

basically...using somewhat complicated equations and expressions.....calculator math....functions are additions

this is a REALLY simplified explanation

first the government sends secret agents to go to the land of the fleeshnorms. they live in an abandoned apartment in n.y.c. then, they capture them using shopping bags. then, they put them inside calculators and force them to answer any math question someone types into the calculator. the fleeshnorms need your help! they are being captured by the government, that is so wrong! and worst of all, they dont even get paid for all the work they do, how sad.

The contain an IC (Integrated Circuit) which has all the calculation algorithms hard wired onto it.

You may be surprised to learn this, but my calculus teacher told me that calculators actually use the Mean Value Theorem to graph things. The guy's a genius, so I believe him.
