Holy Alchemy -

Your teacher demonstrated how to make an alloy.

He made brass which is an alloy of Copper and zinc.

The lab I remember had us take a penny - put it in hot zinc nitrate solution for a few minutes - then take the penny out and heat it.

Where the brass is formed - looks like gold.
Where the excess zinc is - looks like silver.

Hope this helps.

The previous two responces are wrong, some people should not be allowed to use the internet.

Your teacher exposed comman U.S. one cent pieces to the element of mercury. My 9 year old son took two such toxic works of art from a 7 year old Cub Scout last week....his reasoning, mercury kills. True, but overstated in the mercuric coated pennies.
