I have used linux for about 13 years. I have used it exclusively for the last 10 years. I would not reccomend Linspire to anyone under any circumstances. Another poster reccomended Ubuntu , which is a capable distribution and easily had from the internet. I might also suggest that you take a look at SuSe (my favorite). It will works well for development work. If you are expecting to grab a program off of the shelf at Wallmart and make it work , well you might want to stick with what you have.

I've tried Freespire which is obviously the free version, it lasted all of ten minutes on my machine - just didn't like it. It's based on Debian the same as Ubuntu which is a very popular distribution.I like Mandriva personally, good RPM based distribution.
Virtually all Linux distributions are better than Windows, they can be a little difficult with hardware support but Microsoft pays a lot of money for drivers to include with Windows.

Yuck. I tried it out long ago and frankly I couldn't stand it. It's fine if all you're doing is checking email and browsing the web, but I do design work and there was simply nothing I found that would compare to Photoshop or Dreamweaver. Sure Gimp is okay, but nah. Ubuntu is a much better Linux distro if you want to go that way.
