Well, my kids are 23 to 26, and at that time, docs recommended no solids til 6 months---but I disagreed. Mine had weak cereal by NO later than 2 months. The first food they fed themselves were graham crackers.
Tasty, easy to gum up, and not easy to choke on.

Besides baby food, my sons first "grown up" food was mashed potatos but not gravy. He was 6 months old (this was just last week or so).

I gave my daughter toast with vegemite at 3 months and she loved chewing on the toast... also dried bananas (available from health food store without preservatives) was good for her to chew on... vegemite is australian so if you're in another country, maybe just toast with a little bit of butter, .... gets them used to chewing on something that's not going to disintegrate...

PS : don't give gravy to under 1's as it has too high salt content and they can dehydrate..

besides babyfood, my son's first table food was stewed squash at 5 months. His grandmother had prepared it with lots of onions and black pepper and salt (in other words, a lot of stuff he wasn't supposed to have). But he loved it. We couldn't feed it to him fast enough. It must have been an overload on his taste buds after that bland baby food.

Now, of course at 3, he won't even try squash. pfft. kids.

My daughter ate the same food the "big people" ate when the doctor said to start her on solid foods...about 3-4 months. I just pureed it in the blender, she had everything, steak, spaghetti, lazagna, turkey, chicken...as well as broccolli, cauliflower, zuccini, egg plant, etc.

Mashed banana at 6 months---she loved it (and loves it now). Mashed potatoes at 7 months--without the gravy. She was so-so about it.

We gave her mashed bananas at 4 months...she looked at us like we were crazy and furrowed her eyebrows! It was very cute! Within a few days, she LOVED it.

I think it was mashed potatos from the table or gravy at two or three months. He loved it. Now we give him chicken, enciladas, and pretty much whatever we eat--just a bite. He is seven months now and loves anything and everything.
