I have abnormal periods and by that i mean that i have my period maybe one to three times a year. My husband and i desperately want to have children and have been trying for over two years with no results. I have been to the doctor and they can't seem to figure out what the problem could be. They just know that there is nothing wrong with my thyroid and that my uterus is fine. When i was younger i was put on birth control. I stopped after two years. It has been about four years since then. Has anyone out there had something like this happen to them before? If so, were you able to concieve? I appreciate any answers. Thank you.

yes i have the same irregular periods. it took my husband and i 8 months to get pregnant. we're trying again right now and the doc is making us try for a year before they'll put me on any meds to help me ovulate. your docs should be giving you something to help ovulation, because my doc told me that not having a period means you're not ovulating. i have also had all those test done and every thing came back normal. you should really push for them to help you ovulate. good luck, i know how awful it can make you feel to go month after month and not get pregnant.

I know exactly what you're going through and I asked myself that same question a million times. I started ttc 19 years ago when I got married. I can't tell you how many doctors said it was because of my weight or just be patient it will happen. I think 19 years is pretty darn patient. My periods were soooo irregular they were almost obsolete. I would go 1 to 4 years without a period. It wasn't until last August that I finally found a doctor that knew what he was talking about. He discovered that I had PCOS and a 9 pound cyst in my stomach leaning against one of my tubes. After removing the cyst, he put me on 3 rounds of clomid to help me ovulate but nothing. I was also put on metformin to regulate my periods and they came like clockwork- every 28 days. I stopped taking the metformin in April and missed periods both in June and July. So I started them up again. I am presently on my 3rd month of metformin but for some strange reason did not get my period this month. Was due 9/22 so I am now 9 days late. I went in Thursday for a bloodtest and am now very nervously and anxiously awaiting the result. It is definitely possible for you to conceive if you have PCOS. It's not curable but it is treatable. You should definitely find a doctor that knows what they're doing. When you go in mention to them that maybe they could check for PCOS. Don't give up hope. I'm 39 years young now and I'll continue to try until God grants my wish or rules it out completely! Good Luck to you, I hope everything turns out well.
PS
Oh by the way it was my normal ob/gyn that found the problem. I have seen quite a few fertility specialist that couldn't figure it out.

my cycles were the same way, I have 3 kids now with no problems of conceiving at all. The doc told me my weight was low which could have caused it, and my diet wasnt all that great. I did not eat enough protein. I jogged alot which was of some interest to him?? Question was if I might possibly be under nourished.. At any rate after gaining 6lbs I had a cycle 3months in a row then skipped two only to find out I was 2 months pregnant. went back on the pill after my first then off in order to try for another 3 months later I was pregnant again.

What kind of birth control were you on and for how long?

I know that's personal but here is why I ask. I was on the shot for just one time and I couldn't concieve for a year and a half. I was deperate. When I went into get put on the pill to regulate my periods I found out I was pregnant.

The information would be nice to know! I'll check back later.

I would seek out a second opinion, I have also been TTC for 3 years now, my periods were irregular (not as off as yours) I would get a period every 35-50 days, a regular period should be every 28-30 days,,, any how the doctor I now see is a fertility doctor and she put me on Metformin (is the generic name), but its to help regulate my cycle and to help promote ovulation every month- maybe that is what you need? something to help promote ovulation, I am only on my 2nd month of these pills and I just had my 2nd cycle, and it was in 28 days on the dot... this may or may not help,, but good luck and take care...

How many doctors have you been to? If only one, get a second opinion.

Maybe you have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)? Your symptoms sounds similar to PCOS. I had a friend who didn't have her period except every few months. And when she took birth control pills, it made her period regular. Very strange.

But this is just a single experience I know about with a female friend; I'm a guy and not a doctor and honestly don't know too much about this kind of stuff. But maybe there's a slim chance that you and my friend have the same thing going on. ;)

if you go to a doctor and they say they dont know whats wrong with you, then you need a second opinion. theres very few situations involving conception that a 'real' doctor wont understand or have an answer for. if its been more than a year tho, you have fertility issues, either you or your husband. you need to see a qualified fertility doctor. nobody on yahoo answers is gonna be able to give you the type of answer youd get from a qualified physician. good luck

Maybe you're not menstruating often because you aren't ovulating often. See your doctor about this. If you're still not sure, there are a few methods out there to determine if you're ovulating. Clearblue makes fertility monitors that can help you to know when (and if) you are ovulating.

You need to go to a fertility specialist. 4 years of trying is too long without answers.
