What are they specifically and why do you believe in them?

I have two:
1. I always touch wood to bring about luck in a future event and to protect me from harm if I fear something. I started doing it in my high school days and have kept doing it because I believe it has worked for me.
2. I always leave a tiny amount of food on my dinner plate. I never completely finish a plate of food. I don't know why I do this or what's behind it psychologically, but I've done it as long as I can remember and it just feels right.

My mother is from Irish descent and has a number of very humourous superstitions, for example:
- Never place new shoes on a table.
- Never cross knives.
- Never open an umbrella indoors.
- Always get out of the same side of the bed each morning.
- Never walk under a ladder.

Well i used to be really bad with superstitions... lift my feet when driving over train tracks, break a mirror seven years bad luck, never open umbrella in the house, Never say something will never happen (cause it will), say knock on wood when something bad crosses your mind, or someone says something bad might happen) and actually knocking on wood, or doing the sign of the horns, flicking the light on and off a couple times or something bad will happen, hold your breath when passing a grave yard, do the sign of the horns (as to say knock on wood) when a crow flys over your car as you drive or some one will fall ill or die, or something bad will happen...ETC.... Some of these are old superstitions and some of them are recent, Wow, i never realized how many superstitions i had, GEEZ.........................

I don't have any superstitions, per se. That being said, even though I am an atheist, I kind of have a superstition that deals with karma. I have noticed that when I do bad things, bad things happen to me. I wouldn't say that I have changed my life because of this but it has made me try to be better towards people. And in the end can that be a bad thing?

I always knock on wood when saying something I don't want to come true, and I always throw salt over my shoulder when I spill it. I also worry when I say something bad about my boyfriend or family like they'll die in a car crash or something.
