Driving from the east coast (Maryland) to the west coast (Arizona). I have no idea on how to breakdown the trip and where to stay. There will be 2 drivers. My preference would be to fly but will be there for 3-6 months and will need a car. Help.

I think that you should map the trip, and stay in a city instead of a town. Yahoo has a trip planner, but I have not used it. I used Yahoo local reviews to decide where I would stay. I like Mapquest the best, because you have the option to avoid tolls.

Yes I say Joice AAA, but there are several good places to to check on the web. If you want, make sure you check with the Local DPS offices and they can also point out good safe places for Rest stop and restroom breaks when needed. I have drive from east coast to west coast myself, but u started a liltte high up. My be advice is also get you a good hand held GPS device... It can map out all the major roads and Local Highways. When I dorve aross I used Interstate 20 to Interstate 10 Through Arizona and into California, then all the way up the California Coast line to Washington state Via Oregon...So I know what ur thinking, I did that 10 yrs ago, so hopefully to roads are better now than then.
Also make sure ur car has a good tune-up and chk all of ur vital fluids, and also chk ur wheel wear, make sure the tires are in good shape. have a spare and emergency kit with you. Maybe even think about hand held cb-radio...Hope this helps

When I drove across the country I found a Motel 6 every few hundred miles, and I found them good, inexpensive accommodation.

Join AAA, the American Automobile Assoc., and get their maps and road guides. They have free books that suggest hotels and restaurants and rate them.
