I am a freshman at UC-Berkeley and I came in as undecided. I want to pursue a career in the social sciences and I wanted to try a major in Social Welfare. If anyone has anything that they could tell me about that it would be very helpful...thank you

Think about what you want to do for a living, and the life style you'd like to attain. Social work is very emotionally taxing and the pay is pitiful. Look into psychology and other soft science fields as well but do so in terms of how you apt to live after school is done. Most people I know who went into social work ended up burned out and very disillusioned. In any case, you'll probably need to get a masters to get a more interesting career in these lines of study. Good luck. You're at a great school and the future is wide open.

Social welfare is a wonderful career to pursue. Berkeley has one of the best programs in the nation. There are many options for you with a degree in social welfare, such as direct services to clients (social work) or policy analysis. If you have a strong desire to help the most vulnerable people in our society, this is the career path for you. You will never become rich in this field, but it is very fulfilling nonetheless. You will need a graduate degree (MSW) to advance beyond entry level work. Again, Berkeley has one of the best MSW programs in the U.S. Good luck!!!

In the end it's your decision. Just remember that social welfare is about helping people and not just gaining a qualification.
