Come on - there's a reason that we make fun of: whites being poor dancers, blacks liking watermelon, Jews being good with money, 30 hispanics living in a 2 bedroom apartment, Asians being good at math, etc. Don't you think we all need to just laugh and lighten up?

We all stereotype. I learned this in my studies in socialogy. It didn’t turn over well with many of the students though. Primarily the act of stereotyping is a mostly unconscious process performed by the brain to quickly process social information. We have categories, generalizations, and labels we apply to people so that we can easily retrieve it when we need more information about a person than what they have told us. This goes for race, religion, gender. More positives are tied with white, and negatives are more commonly tied with black.

In some cases for particular purposes they are essential and useful as a survey on 200 people can't account for the individuality of 200 different people, neither can the media/ but it is indeed a fine line to walk on and is a gross over-simplification of character.
Its much easier to stereotype someone than to get to know them personally though not half as rewarding. People do need to lighten up a bit, but that no one has the right to disrespect others. Stereotypes are reinforced by people who are offended by them and so feel if people see them that way, what is the point in being different 'if the shoe fits wear it'...'Give a dog a bad name and hang him...etc
Most similarities observed between members when stereotyping a group are the result of culture, demand characteristics and similar upbringing. Stereotypes cannot truly exist, people are too diverse for that.

some of it may be true but that doesnt mean that all of it is. One stereotype of gays is that they all were abused or raped when they were younger which is NOT true for the simple fact that i am gay and NOTHING happend when i was little! Most of its crap although in some situations its not. Im also black and i hate watermelon!.....stereotypes are for ppl who dont have a life and couldnt find anything else better to do. Im not hispanic so i woudnt know about any living conditions......Asians....i have an asian friend who hates school period. Stereotypes are just a waste of time. We should really give it up! SO i say we can laugh in some situations but others...but just know most ppl arent really like the stereotypes make them seem to be.

Yeah, there are people who fit right into the stereotype and I don't think it's wrong to make fun of them. Like my neighbours. They fit exactly into the inconsiderate ghetto thug stereotype that people put on all black people. I'm not racist, but the fact that I have vibrating walls now from all the bass makes me say things I've never said before. These people are keeping black people down by perpetuating the stereotype that hurts them so much.

Absolutely, I agree 100%! What an excellent question! It's just life to fall into a certain category in the scheme of things.

Stereotypes do exist in real life; but we shouldn't make sweeping statements about groups of people based on stereotypes because it's just plain dumb. All Irish are not drunks, all Jews do not have big noses, all gay men are not sissies ... etc etc etc

With all the non offensive humorous things to laugh at, why would you consider making light of harmful stereotypes? You are the one who needs to "lighten up" and try to get at least 3 more brain cells activated. I believe in laughing with people while you are advocating laughing at them.

Yes, some are very funny. In my life everything you stated in your question is true. I've found that people whom are offended by them get this way because some how some way it pertains to them or someone close to them. So being human we are going to get offended. Thats what makes us who we are.

I will continue to laugh at them and use them in everyday life. I just don't find it necessary to worry about offending anybody. Phuckem if they can't take a joke.
